Factors to Consider When Buying a Combination Mattress

Combination sleepers need a balance of consistent comfort and support— this is key to keeping the spine aligned.

When looking for the best mattress for combination sleepers, potential customers need to be aware of the mattress material, level of firmness and support, responsiveness of the sleep surface, whether the mattress has good motion isolation, body weight, price tag, and if a sleep trial, warranty, and return policy are offered.

Sleeping Positions

The four basic sleeping positions have both pros and cons. Combination sleepers can reap the benefits from each sleep position, but also face the drawbacks of each.

Side Sleepers

The side sleeping position is one of the most popular and the healthiest sleeping positions. Side sleeping enables better oxygen intake and reduces the risk of snoring. Sleeping on the side, particularly the right side removes pressure from vital organs like the lungs and liver, and helps reduce acid reflux.

  • Decreased risk of snoring
  • Lying on the left side removes pressure from vital organs

  • Increased risk of developing facial wrinkles
  • Numbness/pain in shoulders and arms

Back Sleepers

Back sleeping aligns the spine. While it does open airways, there is a risk of snoring and developing sleep apnea—sleeping on the back may cause the collapse of soft tissue at the back of the throat, blocking the air passage.

  • Neutral sleep position ideal for healthy spine alignment
  • Reduced risk of twisting the body

  • Increased risk of snoring
  • Can worsen sleep apnea symptoms

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleeping is the least recommended sleep position because of the many health risks associated with it, like neck strain and lower back pain. Neck strain is caused when stomach sleepers twist their neck to the side at an unnatural angle to breath. Lying on the stomach causes gravity to straighten the natural curve of the spine, causing lower back pain.

  • Reduced risk of snoring

  • Possible stiffness in neck from twisting it at unnatural angles
  • Possible lower back pain from gravity pulling against the spine’s natural curve

The type of material found in a mattress may impact how much sleep a combination sleeper can achieve. For example, if a combination sleeper chooses a firm innerspring mattress, they may encounter more pressure points and less conforming, resulting in possible sleep disruptions and waking with aches and pains the following morning. Firmness level can range depending on the material. Since combination sleepers do best on a medium-firm mattress, memory foam, latex, innersprings, and hybrids would be the best mattress types for them.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses contain at least two layers— a high-density poly-foam base and a memory foam comfort layer. With good motion isolation, memory foam offers consistent support while contouring to the body. Combination sleepers should avoid memory foam mattresses with a deep sinking sensation, since it makes it harder to change positions. Combination sleepers need a memory foam mattress where they sleep on instead of in the mattress.

Natural latex is derived from the sap of rubber trees, while synthetic latex is made through a chemical process. There are two types of natural latex— Dunlop and Talalay. Dunlop latex is denser in structure, but more durable. Talalay latex contains strategically placed ventilation holes that offer targeted support with a softer feel.

A latex mattress may contain both a comfort latex layer and a support latex layer. Latex, like memory foam, conforms to the body to relieve pressure, however, latex is more responsive and tends to sleep cooler. This type of mattress comes at a higher cost, especially if it contains natural latex.

An innerspring mattress consists of steel coils with a comfort layer on top. The contouring ability of an innerspring depends on the material and thickness of the comfort layer. Innerspring mattresses provide consistent support and are highly responsive. They usually have better edge support and sleep cooler compared to other mattress types.

A hybrid mattress contains a combination of coils and foam— pocket coils act as a support layer with some type of foam as a comfort layer. For a mattress to be a true hybrid, it should have at least 3 inches of foam in it as well as a coil layer. Pocket coils give excellent support while reducing motion transfer and noise.

Hybrid mattresses have good edge support, so sleepers won’t feel like they’re about to roll off the bed. They also sleep cool because of the good air circulation inside the innerspring coil layer while the comfort layers contour closely to the body. Hybrid mattresses are more expensive because of the large amounts of materials they contain.

Firmness and Support

Combination sleepers will need a medium-firm mattress for optimal comfort and support. The medium-firm feel allows slight sinkage of the hips in back sleepers, good support for stomach sleepers, and the right amount of pressure-relieving comfort for side sleepers. Medium-firm helps keep the spine in constant spinal alignment despite changes in sleep position.

While it’s important for a mattress to conform to the body to relieve pressure, it’s just as important to have a responsive sleep surface. Responsiveness allows a combination sleeper to easily change sleep positions without feeling stuck.

Motion Isolation

Since combination sleepers often switch positions, a mattress with excellent motion isolation is key. Motion isolation allows the mattress to absorb a sleeper’s movement and prevent it from traveling to anyone else in the bed. A mattress with good motion isolation is especially ideal for couples. Sleep is less likely to be disrupted for both parties if a mattress absorbs any movement.

Body weight can determine the type of mattress you choose. Bodyweight affects how much you sink in a mattress and its level of support. For example, firm mattresses are a poor choice for lightweight sleepers because they don’t weigh enough to properly sink into the bed, thus losing the benefits of pressure relief and comfort. Heavyweights, however, would do better with a firm bed because it shouldn’t sag easily but maintains support.

Before going out to shop, make sure you have a set budget. Know that certain types of mattresses may come at a higher cost, like hybrids and latex mattresses. The price may also depend on the size of mattress you choose. Twin and full sizes will cost less than a queen or king size.

Online mattresses are a great option for those on a budget. Online stores cut out the middleman, and can, therefore, offer high-quality beds for less. It’s also easier to compare several mattresses at once instead of visiting several stores and face pressure to buy from salesmen.

Sleep Trials, Warranties, and Return Policies

Features like sleep trials, warranties, and return policies are ways to assure the customer of a good purchase. A mattress is a big investment— if a customer isn’t happy or satisfied with a new bed, especially one bought online, they don’t have to be stuck with it. Through a sleep trial and a return policy, customers can arrange for a full refund. If a customer loves their new mattress and decides to keep it, a warranty helps protect their investment.

Sleep Trial

A sleep trial is a great way to try out a new mattress within the comfort of your own home. Sleep trials offer plenty of time for the body to break in the mattress and adjust to it. If customers are not happy with the mattress within the sleep trial period, it can be returned for a full refund.

A warranty outlines what customers can expect from manufacturers, and what manufacturers can expect from customers. Always read the fine print to see what the policy is regarding defects and who will be covering additional fees like shipping and inspection fees, the customer or the manufacturer.

Return Policy

Read the policy to see what the guidelines and restrictions are, especially if shipping and handling costs are covered by the manufacturer or the customer. Return policies are sometimes offered in place of sleep trials—they last at least 30 days, the right amount of time it may take for the body to adjust to a new bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I’m a combination sleeper?

If you fall asleep on your side, but wake in the morning on your stomach, you’re a combination sleeper. Combination sleepers can switch between up to 2 to 3 different sleep positions.

Are pillows important? What about pillows?

Yes. Pillows cradle the neck and head, helping to keep the spine in alignment. You should have a pillow specifically for your sleep position. For example, someone who sleeps on their stomach needs a low-loft pillow— just enough loft to slightly lift and cradle the head and neck, but not enough to misalign the spine.

Have You Found the Best Mattress?

As a combination sleeper, the right mattress needs to offer the right support, especially when switching to different sleep positions all night A too soft or too firm mattress could throw the spine out of alignment due to excessive sagging or lack of cushioning. We highly recommend a medium-firm mattress that offers the perfect balance of comfort and support for each sleep position.
