  • Every returned mattress is donated or recycled to minimize landfill waste.
Recommended for...
  • Solo sleepers and couples with demanding lifestyles.
  • People who want a queen size mattress with some bounce.
  • Hot sleepers looking for a cooling gel memory foam hybrid.

Some sleepers prefer a bed that’s bouncier than the average foam mattress. If that sounds like you, you might want to consider a Zoma Hybrid. To create a Zoma Hybrid, the makers took the original’s restorative foams and combined them with a coil support layer.

The top layer is 2 inches of gel memory foam with Triangulex™ technology. Zoma places triangular cutouts across the foam’s surface for more pressure relief to your head, shoulders, and legs. There are no cutouts in the back area to preserve the bed’s firm support.

Next is 2 inches of Reactiv™ foam, a responsive material that provides support. Thanks to Reactiv™, you’ll never sink so far that you feel “stuck” or “trapped.”

Last is a 7-inch layer of pocketed coils on a firm foam base. Zoma wraps the coils in fabric to keep your every movement from rippling across the mattress, which tends to cause sleep disturbances. Stiff foams surround the coil layer for protection and support.

Every Zoma Hybrid comes with a 10-year warranty. If your mattress ever develops sagging that exceeds .75 inches, Zoma will repair or replace it at no cost to you.

You have 100 nights to make your Zoma Hybrid feels comfortable after it arrives. Returns are hassle-free since Zoma will pick up the mattress for donating or recycling.

Different Queen Mattress Types

The standard queen-size mattress measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. It accommodates two adults or an adult and a pet. Even though the standard queen is the most popular queen bed, there are other variations available for purchase.

The California queen is 60 inches by 84 inches. It’s designed for taller adults, giving them extra legroom. This mattress size is a good quality for those who sleep with a partner.

The Olympic, or expanded, queen bed measures 66 inches by 80 inches. It’s meant for those who need a little more room to spread out but don’t need a king-sized bed.

A split queen mattress comes as two separate mattresses, each measuring 30 inches by 80 inches. Pushed together, these mattresses measure out to form a whole standard queen mattress. It’s a good option for couples who have different firmness preferences.

You’ll want to consider the type of queen mattress you get want. A standard queen may not give you the comfort you need. For instance, if you get a standard queen, and you’re over six feet tall, your feet may hang over the edge and cause sleep disruptions throughout the night. A California bed is long enough to give the sleeper the legroom they need to have quality sleep.

Mattress Consideration

As we’ve said before, you’ll need to consider more than the mattress size. You need to consider what firmness will help you and your sleep partner sleep best. You should consider your sleep position, what materials you would like, and the mattress’s cooling abilities.

After you’ve decided on a few mattresses, you can narrow the list down to one by considering the sleep trial, warranty, and return policy.

Firmness

Mattress firmness is rated on a scale of 1 to 10; ten is the firmest option, while one is the softest.

Finding your perfect firmness isn’t an exact science. It deals greatly with your personal preference, body type, sleeping position, and, most importantly, keeping your spine in alignment. We recommend starting with your sleeping position as it will give you a ballpark estimate of your preferred firmness.

Sleeping Position

Side Sleepers

Side sleeping is the most popular sleeping position— it aligns the spine and allows for better breathing; however, side sleepers are prone to pressure points under the hips and shoulders.

The best mattresses for side sleepers are medium, medium-soft, or medium-firm, as these mattresses are usually soft enough to allow for adequate compression and pressure relief under the shoulders and hips.

Back Sleepers

Back sleeping is the healthiest for the spine, as it naturally aligns when someone lies on their back. As a result, back sleepers do not need a soft mattress. Soft mattresses can cause the hips to bow into the mattress, leading to skeletal and muscular pain. A firmer mattress can allow the sleeper to maintain alignment.

Stomach Sleepers

We highly suggest stomach sleepers switch to another sleeping position as stomach sleeping places stress on the back. When sleeping on your stomach, your spine’s natural curvature straightens, compressing the gelatinous disks cushioning your vertebrae and irritating the sciatic nerve.

To prevent misalignment and chronic pain, a firmness between seven and nine is needed as the material will prevent any further bowing and preserve the spine’s natural curve.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers switch between two or more sleeping positions. Because these sleepers are versatile, they’ll need a mattress just as versatile to keep their spine aligned. We suggest trying a medium to start and then adjusting your firmness depending on your preferences.

Body Type

Now that you have a firmness range to choose from, you’ll want to narrow that range by considering your body type.

Smaller people place less pressure on the mattress’s surface. In order to feel cushioned, a softer mattress is needed. Plush materials allow smaller framed individuals to feel the contouring and supportive effects of the mattress. If a bed is too firm, the lighter sleeper will cultivate pressure points and wake up with sore muscles and joints.

Larger framed people need a firm mattress to avoid the “stuck” feeling. A soft mattress will cause a heavier individual to bow at the hips, causing misalignment and pain. A firmer mattress will offer enough support to keep the spine aligned and contour enough to alleviate pressure points.

Mattress Materials

Different types of mattresses utilize various materials to achieve comfort. While most mattresses create good sleep environments, there are some materials with better cooling and supportive qualities than others.

Latex

Latex mattresses are the most supportive beds on the market. They are very cooling due to the material’s natural porous structure. Latex mattresses come in several different forms: natural, synthetic, blended.

Natural latex mattresses are made from rubber tree sap and contain antimicrobial, hypoallergenic, and biodegradable qualities. It’s made with the Dunlop method, which is more affordable and produces a firm, contouring material.

Synthetic latex is made from a chemical compound. It mimics latex characteristics but is not antimicrobial or biodegradable. It made using the Talalay method, which cultivates a bouncy and supportive material. It’s a great option for those allergic to latex.

Blended latex is a combination of natural and synthetic latex. It has antimicrobial properties, although we do suggest a blended latex bed with a CertiPUR-US® certification, as some synthetic latexes contain harmful additives.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses are made with coil cores and thin wool, cotton, or polyester comfort layers. There are spring beds with Euro or pillow tops, which is an additional protective layer between the sleeper and the innerspring core.

These beds foster air circulation and are very supportive, although they are known to sag more frequently than other beds.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses rival latex in comfortability and support. Their slow response to pressure allows deep contouring; however, these beds do retain heat. Luckily, open-cell and plant-based memory foam foster more airflow than traditional memory foam. Copper, graphite, and gel infusions pull heat from the sleeper for cooler night’s sleep.

Hybrid

Hybrid beds are a combination of coil cores and foam layers. They have the support and breathability of an innerspring mattress and the contouring abilities of a foam bed. For people who like the bounce of innersprings but want the benefits of foam, a hybrid is the best option.

Temperature Neutrality

Hot sleepers and couples need to consider the mattress’s ability to circulate air. Look into cooling technologies, such as gel, copper, and graphite infusions. Latex and innerspring mattress materials promote airflow, keeping overheating sleepers cool. If you want a memory foam mattress, search for a plant-based or advanced open-cell memory foam as the foam is much more breathable than traditional memory foam.

Sleep Trial, Return Policy, and Warranty

After you’ve decided on your firmness, mattress materials, and cooling technologies, you’ll want to narrow your list of bed candidates by ensuring the company is reputable. One of the best ways to ensure you’ll get a good product is to read the fine print of the sleep trial, return policy, and warranty.

Return Policy

In the past, a mattress return required the customer to pay a restocking and transportation fee. Now, the best mattress brands are usually willing to pick-up and donate the mattress at their expense. Best of all, they don’t charge a restocking fee. We suggest looking for a company offering free services on the off chance you get a mattress that doesn’t fit your sleep preferences.

Sleep Trial

Since many bed in a box beds are not available in storefronts, customers are given a trial period to sleep on the mattress in their house. We suggest a trial of at least 100 days as this will give you time to test the product, decide if you like it, and make arrangements to make a return. Look through the sleep trial policy to ensure it’s risk-free.

Warranty

We suggest choosing a mattress with a warranty at least 10 years long. The warranty length is a good indication of the mattress’s durability as the contract is a reflection of the company’s confidence in its product.

A company should cover all material and workmanship defects, such as indentations, sagging, and split or cracked foam. A warranty will not cover natural wear and tear or damage received from improper care or use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best mattress of 2020?

Our top mattress recommendation is the Amerisleep AS3, a versatile mattress that can support most sleeping positions and body types. But while we highly recommend it, we also understand it’s not the perfect mattress for everyone. If you’re looking for the best mattress for a sleep issue, such as back pain or snoring, give our other mattress guides a try.

Why are hotel mattresses so comfortable?

Hotel mattresses are comfortable because they use high-quality mattresses with toppers and mattress pads that further the bed’s luxurious feel. You often have up to five or six pillows for a plush sleep experience. Plus, hotel staff usually replace the bedding every morning as well, so you’re always lying on a clean pair of sheets.

If you want to replicate the hotel bed experience, try following our guides to find the best mattress for you. Then, upgrade the bed with cloud-like pillows and soft, breathable sheets.

What’s the best mattress for a side sleeper?

Side sleepers should look for a mattress that can ease pressure points and joint pain, especially shoulder, hip, and neck pain. Look for a mattress with a soft to medium feel. We also recommend conforming materials such as memory foam or latex for maximum pressure relief and a thick pillow to support your neck.

What’s the best month to buy a mattress?

May is usually recommended as the best month for mattress buying. Aside from Memorial Day being one of the bigger mattress sales days of the year, May is when a lot of companies try to clear out older stock. Often, new mattress models are released in June, so stores want to free up space for new stock.

Is it better to sleep on a soft or hard bed?

It’s best to sleep on a mattress that matches your sleeping style. Side sleepers should look for softer mattresses that feature cushioning and pressure relief. Back and stomach sleepers should look for firmer mattresses that can keep their spines from sinking out of alignment.

Conclusion

Queen beds come in many different types, firmnesses, and styles. As long as you follow our guidelines, you’ll find the best mattress. Keep in mind your partner’s sleep needs and look into the warranty, sleep trial, and the return policy to ensure the product is durable and the company is reputable.
