Amerisleep’s Warranty is broken up into 2 separate segments.

The first section of the warranty starts from the purchase date to the 10th year. During this time, defects in materials and workmanship as defined by the warranty will result in the mattress’s replacement at the expense of the company. After the 10th year, the customer has the offer to buy a second mattress at a discounted price.

In other words, the longer you use your mattress the bigger your discount.

100-night Sleep Trial

Simply, during the Amerisleep sleep trial, you have 100 nights to try the mattress. If you love it then you can continue to use the mattress. Past the initial 100 days, the mattress will then be completely yours. However, if you do not like the Amerisleep AS3 you can return the mattress any time within the trial period.

However, if you would like to exchange the mattress for another Amerisleep model, remember that there are 4 other Amerisleep mattresses to try. The transition layer contains a highly-responsive, super-soft foam called Active Flex. This layer is how Amerisleep was able to create the ultimate soft mattress without sacrificing support. Active Flex automatically adjusts to shifting weight, maintaining comfort and support to help keep the spine in alignment.

The support layer contains hundreds of pocketed innerspring coils that form three zones of support. You and your partner will experience softness under the head, shoulders, and legs, and firmness under the back and hips. Finding the Best Mattress for Couples

Best Mattress for CouplesIf you and your partner are at odds in the bedroom, the first step is to identify the root of the conflict, then seek solutions designed for your situation.

There are many couples who have multiple issues revolving around their mattress that could be solved with a better selection.

Below, you’ll find several of the more common issues that sleeping partners have to deal with.

Mattress Size

You know what you’re thinking, mattress size has got to be the most common issue. You wouldn’t be wrong.

One of the more common arguments in any relationship corresponded to the division of the bed. Every relationship has a bed hogger or a snuggler. If you’re someone who likes their space as they sleep, sharing a bed with bed hog if one of the worst sleeping arrangements you can participate in. not only do you get hot and sweaty, but you can not fall asleep because you’re thinking about the invasion of your personal bubble.

This is where the size of your mattress comes into play.

For couples, the Editors’ of SavvySleeper highly recommend a standard queen mattress or bigger.

For couples for are of average build and do not take up very much space, a queen will be big enough. However, for those couples with a beg hog, we recommend going with a king-size mattress. This suggestion goes double when you’re a couple that has a child that likes to join you in bed in the middle of the night.

A California King may be an option if both sleeping partners like to spread out.

Mattress Firmness and Feel

One of the most prevailing complaints among couples shopping for a mattress is that one person prefers firm and the other plush. This is especially common for couples with significantly different weights or different preferred sleep positions.

One solution for traditional mattresses is to buy the firmer option and a mattress topper for the softie’s side. However, this can be cumbersome. Most couples don’t like the height difference in height between the two sides when a mattress topper is used. It creates an uncomfortable transition that makes snuggling awkward.

Perhaps the best mattress option for couples with differing firmnesses are beds that allow each side to be customized. A few ideas include:

Customizable Beds: Helix is a customizable mattress company. They will offer suggestions on what type of mattress you need based on your sleeping style, weight, and height and then allow you to adjust the layers as you desire. Kinda like build-a-bear, but with mattresses. Helix mattresses allow customization on both sides of the bed. This will help you and your partner receive your desired firmness and adequate support.

Dual Water Beds: Mattresses with water chambers are another potential solution. Each partner can use different types of water bladders (more fiber feels firmer). But, some models have bars in the middle which can affect cuddling, waterbeds aren’t practical for everyone, and some models can be loud at night. Boyd and US Watermattress are two well-established brands in this sector. Expect to spend at least $800 on a queen-size dual soft side waterbed, or at least $1000 for kings.

Two Same-Height Mattresses: The other option would be to buy two mattress halves of similar height and place them side-by-side. This is easiest with king-size frames, as each half is a twin XL bed (38”x80”). If one of you likes memory foam and the other springs, for example, this could be a good solution.

The feel of the mattress relies heavily on several other mattress attributes. Although the firmness scale – 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest – has been agreed on as a universal rating of a mattresses firmness, it is still highly relative.

Let us explain further. Let’s say that a person of average weight and height with a side sleeping style lays down on a mattress will medium firmness. Most likely, this mattress would be much too hard for this person. This mattress doesn’t meet the contouring specification that the side sleeper needs. What this person needs is a softer mattress that will allow the sleeper to sink into the mattress so that the materials are fully allowed to interact with the individual’s body.

On the other hand, if you took someone with the same height who possessed a weight 40 lbs more than our first sleeper. It is very possible that the mattress would be a good fit.

For the smaller framed sleeper the mattress with medium firmness was much too hard, while for the heavier sleeper it was a soft mattress and both people shared to same contouring benefits. This is namely because the heavy sleeper was able to sink down into the mattress to enjoy the conforming benefits that mattress had to offer.

Health Issues

Best Firm Mattress for CouplesThere are several health conditions that can make sleeping flat uncomfortable, including acid reflux/GERD, back or joint pain, sleep apnea, edema and more. If health issues affect only one partner or if you both have different concerns, it can make sleeping in the same bed challenging.

One option would be to use wedge pillows that can prop one person’s upper body or legs up without causing much discomfort to the other sleeper. These pillows are typically $40 to $150 and can be good for temporary or occasional use.

The better option for long-term use are adjustable bases. These allow you to adjust the head and foot of the bed using electric motors for quick and convenient position changes. Most brands have split king or queen options that allow each person to customize their side of the bed for their specific needs, while still sleeping side-by-side.

With adjustable bases, you typically but the mattress separate. For split models, you could also choose two different styles or firmnesses of similar heights.

Some of the more highly-rated adjustable beds around include:

Serta Motion Perfect II – Higher-end adjustable base with massage and other features. $1700 in queen, $3200 in split king (occasional sales during holidays).

Amerisleep Adjustable Bed – Higher-end adjustable base with massage, snore function, app controls, and other functions. $1900 in queen, $3600 in split king (frequent sales online throughout the year).

Leggett & Platt Prodigy – Higher-end adjustable base with massage, snore stopper, alarm and more. Around $2000 in queen, $3800 in split king (varies by retailer).

While wedge pillows and adjustable bases are a good option for some health issues, there are other issues that may need to be addressed through the firmness of the mattress.

Some health concerns, such as osteoporosis or arthritis, need to be addressed with a firmer sleeping surface to provide moveability. Without a surface that allows free movement, too much strain would be placed on the joints, which could cause the ailment to worsen.

For those who do have health considers that affect their sleeping habits, talk to your physician. They will be able to direct to your more immediate needs.

Temperature Conflicts

Best Cooling Mattress for CouplesSleeping too hot or too cold on a mattress is another point of contention for some couples. It’s not uncommon to have one partner who’s always cold while the other naturally runs hot.

For many people, this will happen regardless of mattress type, though breathable fabrics and foams can help minimize heat retention. Natural fibers like cotton and wool, performance fabrics like Outlast, and open-cell or plant-based foams can be helpful to look for when trying to find the best mattress.

Other ways to overcome mismatched temperature needs include keeping the room cool and just using separate comforter weights (lighter blankets for the warm one, thicker for the cold one) or using something like the Chilipad that lets each person adjust their space warmer or cooler.

Truly there is really no way to find a perfect medium. Compromise and lots of blankets could be the only way to a happy sleeping arrangement in this case. But just in case, you want to give other mattress types a try, here are some tips.

Innerspring mattresses sleep the coolest. The spring layer that makes up the support system allows air to pass through the mattress, which pulls accumulating heat away from the body and out through the rest of the mattress.

Memory foam mattresses sleep the hottest. This is especially true from traditional memory foam. However, today, memory foam has a different construction that allows air to pass through the material more freely. Memory foam also gets infusion with other ingredients that have cooling properties. The most popular of these materials are the gel beads. However, we have seen copper, graphite, titanium, and thermal changing fabric used to keep a mattress cool. In fact, some mattress companies are able to keep their mattress at such a low temperature that the mattress feels cool to the touch.

Latex and air bed sleep with a temperature somewhere in between innerspring and memory foam mattresses.

As a general rule of thumb, heavier individuals heat up more during the night and need more cooling technologies and materials than those who are smaller framed.

Sinkage

Sometimes sinkage has benefits and other times it may have a negative impact on your spine. It all depends on the way the mattress was constructed.

You may find that when you lay down more weight is centered on your hips than other areas of your body. On an unsupportive mattress, this could cause your body to bend into an angular shape. An unsupportive mattress does not foster proper spinal alignment.

To avoid unsupportive sinkage, look for a mattress with a zoned technology layer. This technology makes up for the heavier portions of your body by giving those areas better support. In other words, more support will be placed in your lumbar region to cut off negative spinal alignment.

Too Much Bounce

Best Mattresses for CouplesMotion is another area of dispute for many couples. Whether you have different schedules or one of you is a light sleeper, a bouncy bed can get annoying quick.

Innerspring mattresses are known to be the most prone to motion transfer. But, types with independent pocket coils and thicker layers of foam are typically better at controlling bounce. All foam latex or memory foam mattresses have the least motion transfer, as the foam absorbs rather than disperses movement.

Another thing to keep in mind, thicker mattress models have better motion isolation and tend to be less noisy when bearing weight. In fact, motion isolation and noiseless performances tend to go hand in hand.

So, if you’re looking for a mattress with low motion transfer and noise level, you probably don’t have to look for both. If you find a mattress that stops motion transfer on impact than you most likely have a noiseless mattress as well.

Weight Limit

For couples, mattress weight limit should be made a must-ask question. A typical mattress has a weight limit of 600 lbs. For two adults, that may be cutting it close. Especially if these two adults weight a little more than average.

But why is it important that the weight limit not be exceeded?

Most, it is because of the damage that might occur to the mattress during the time weight is placed on the sleeping surface. If an excessive among of weight is placed on top of a mattress not constructed to bear that weight, the mattress will begin to break down more quickly. Eventually, this will leave you with a mattress that is unable to perform functionally and you’ll have to buy another mattress.

Mattresses are expensive. No one wants to make such large purchases more than they have to.

Making sure that your mattress can support the weight of you and your partner will help you invest your money more wisely.

Not Enough Support

First, let’s define what support means. It’s the mattresses ability to maintain a flat surface even when an individual sleeper on the mattress surface. Proper support helps align the spine and alleviates pressure points.

Typically, support comes from the core layer of the mattress; however, it can also come from other layers such as foam layers, comfort layers, and transitional layers.

One of the many supportive functions that will determine your quality of rest stand firmly on edge support. One then you would probably like to admit, you’ve ended up on the side of the bed as your sleeping partner sprawls across the other ¾ like had the entire mattress to themselves.

Quality edge support will save you at times like these. Well-structured edge supports should have just as much support to them as the middle of the mattress. This way you can change sleeping positions and sleep without fear of rolling off the mattress.

Buying The Best Mattress For Couples: Your Gameplan

Getting the best mattress is easiest when you plan ahead and communicate with each other. Talk to each other about what you want in a bed, shop together, and look for a solution that will allow both of you to sleep comfortably.

To help, here below you’ll find a step by step guide to making your mattress shopping experience easier.

Talk about your preferences. Like most things in relationships, communication is key when it comes to getting the best mattress.

Discuss what you want in your next bed, what you like/dislike about your current bed, types of mattresses you want to try or research, etc. This helps you get an idea of where you two are similar and where you are mismatched in terms of comfort preferences.

Think about size. For many couples, the more space they have, the more comfortable they will be at night. King size beds give each person the maximum amount of space (38 inches per half). Queen beds give each person 30 inches, less than a twin size. Cal king gives you 36 inches. But, most sleep experts recommend opting for the largest mattress that fits comfortably in your bedroom and budget.

Start shopping. Based on what you learned while discussing preferences, start looking around at the options that would meet your needs. Don’t commit to anything right away – spend time going to different shops. Keep in mind that many specialty mattresses may only be available online, especially if you aren’t near a major metro area. Make notes on what you like and don’t while shopping.

Pick your favorites. Once you’ve done some browsing, start narrowing down your options. Were there any that didn’t work for both of you? Any pros or cons that really stand out? Compare prices and look for reviews online to further narrow down your search.

Buy the best. Once it’s time to buy your favorite mattress, make sure you can return it just in case it doesn’t end up working out. Don’t forget to add any important accessories (such as comforters or cooling pads) that will help complete the best setup for the two of you.

Finding the best mattress options for couples isn’t too much different than shopping for one person, it really just requires being open about what you both like, taking time to research, and perhaps looking outside the box to find a solution that works.

Sleeping Preferences

Best bed for CouplesPicking a mattress is largely affected by your sleeping style. Namely, it affects the firmness of the mattress and your health. Here’s how.

There are three different types of sleeping positions: side, stomach, and back.

Stomach sleeping stands as our least recommended sleeping style. It’s actually every sleeping experts least recommended sleeping style. Mostly due to the health risks that come with the sleeping position, stomach sleepers are advised to sleep on firmer sleeping surfaces that allow more correct alignment in the hips and spine.

Sleep experts also advise that the sleeper sleeps with a pillow placed under the hips and belly. Here comes the why. Stomach sleeping forces the natural curve out of the spine. This can lead to a number of issues that include pinched nerves, back pain, and ruptured disks.

Side sleeping isn’t the most healthy, but it is far more recommended than stomach sleeping. While this sleeping position does not aid the individual in correct posture, it doesn’t straighten out the spine either. The problems regarding posture can be fixes with a pillow between the knees and under the head.

The editors’ of SavvySleeper highly recommend sleeping on the right side to those who are side sleepers. Sleeping of your left side can cause a strain on the internal organs. A study published in the American College of Cardiology stated that those with congestive heart failure should avoid the left to avoid damaging effects caused by elevated filling pressure, ventricular dilation, and reduction in cardiac output.

Back sleeping continues to be considered the best sleeping position out of the three. In this position, the spine has the best alignment, which means fewer injuries. Back sleeping allows the weight of your body to spread out along the mattress, leading to fewer pressure points.

Mattress Types

With a coil system foundation, the creation of these mattresses marked the start of modern beds. In America, they are still considered the most popular mattress despite other mattress materials being available.

The coils provide constant support to the individual sleeping on the surface and are often topped with a pillow topper that acts a comfort layer and protection from the metal springs.

[su_tab title=”Hybrid Mattresses” disabled=”no” anchor=”” url=”” target=”blank” class=””]

Since the early 2000s, Memory foam has made a significant impact on the mattress market. The material contours deeply to the sleeper, relieving pressure and allowing the individual to sleep without pain.

Since it’s creation, sleep experts have been able to completely reconstruct and infuse memory foam with different materials, making it better for the environment and more comfortable for its sleepers.

[/su_tab]
[su_tab title=”Memory Foam Mattresses” disabled=”no” anchor=”” url=”” target=”blank” class=””]

A combination of innerspring, latex or memory foam mattresses, this mattress stands as the second most popular mattress in America. The mattress type takes what is best from available mattress materials and creates mattresses that cater to the needs to certain sleep issues such as night sweats and back pain.

[/su_tab]
[su_tab title=”Latex Mattresses” disabled=”no” anchor=”” url=”” target=”blank” class=””]

Most Latex mattresses are completely biodegradable. So, if you’re someone who wants a natural firm mattress, this may be the mattress for you. Made from the sap harvested from rubber trees, latex is a rubbery supportive material with a reputation for helping alleviate back pain.

These mattresses are fairly good at keeping a sleeper cool as well.

When buying the mattress be sure to know the difference between Talalay and Dunlop Latex.

[su_tab title=”Air Mattresses” disabled=”no” anchor=”” url=”” target=”blank” class=””]

Air mattress aren’t just for visitors that you’re putting up for the night. Trust us, air mattresses have come a long way in the last 15 years. Now, there are air mattresses that can serve as everyday mattresses.

However, these beds are more than air mattresses. These mattresses can evaluate the quality of rest you receive in a single night and adjust the firmness of your mattress in real-time to help you sleep better. But, of course, these mattresses cost upward of $3000.

[/su_tab]
[su_tab title=”Water Mattresses” disabled=”no” anchor=”” url=”” target=”blank” class=””]

Believe it or not, water beds are still rather popular. They provide their sleepers with fantastic support and deep contouring.

Although there are still water beds like the ones you remember, water beds do know always take the form of a plastic rubber lining with free-flowing water pumped inside. Some water beds have other layers staked on top of the water layer, giving the water the task of the supportive structure for the bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should a memory foam mattress be?

Memory foam mattresses should be between 9 and 12 inches thick. If you are a side sleeper who prefers more cushioning around the joints, a memory foam mattress that is between 11 and 12 inches thick will be best. If you are a back sleeper and prefer a medium-firm to firm mattress, a 9 to 10-inch memory foam bed will be suitable.

What type of mattress do chiropractors recommend?

Chiropractors typically recommend memory foam and latex foam mattresses. These beds contour to the curves of the body to provide maximum support and pressure relief. This support system allows the muscles to fully relax and recover.

How often should you change your mattress?

Most high-quality mattresses last between 8 and 10 years, this includes memory foam and hybrid mattress. Latex foam beds tend to last a little longer, around 12 years. However, innerspring beds only last around 6 years because coil springs often break and bend, causing lumps and divots in the mattress. If you notice sagging, rips, and tears, or if you frequently wake up with aches and pains that last throughout the day, it may be time to upgrade your mattress.

Do you need a box spring with a memory foam mattress?

No, most high-quality memory foam mattresses do not need a box spring. They can be placed directly on the foundation of your bed frame. In fact, some box springs can damage the structure of a foam mattress, leading to premature sagging. Memory foam mattresses should be placed on a solid or slatted foundation. Slats should be no more than 3 inches apart to prevent sinking. If the slats of your bed frame are further apart, you can place a 2-inch piece of moisture-resistant plywood between the foundation and the mattress. You can also place this barrier between the box spring and the mattress.

What is the best mattress for back pain?

Those with back pain tend to sleep most comfortably on a medium-firm mattress. This comfort level cushions the joints from pressure points. It is also firm enough to keep the body lifted and prevent spinal misalignment. When the spine is aligned and the joints are protected, the muscles in the back can relax, allowing tension to ease.
